BEYOND THE BIG FIVE: MEET AFRICA’S “UGLY FIVE” ANIMALS (AND WHY THEY’RE ACTUALLY AMAZING)
Everyone knows about Africa’s Big Five—the lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo that steal the spotlight on every safari brochure.
But during my first game drive in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, our guide suddenly stopped the jeep, pointed at a scraggly bird with a bald pink head, and said with genuine excitement: “There! A marabou stork—one of the Ugly Five!”
I had never heard of the Ugly Five before.
Turns out, Africa has another famous group of animals that rarely make it onto postcards. They’re not conventionally beautiful. They don’t have Instagram-worthy manes or graceful gaits. But they are absolutely essential to the savanna ecosystem—and once you understand them, you’ll find yourself just as thrilled to spot them.
